History
The distillery was founded in 1898 by John Duff. In 1900, the distillery had to continue with partial production due to a poor whisky economy at the time. In 1965, the distillery was purchased by the Glenlivet Distillery Ltd. and then reopened permanently. In 1978, the distillery was changed to Seagrams, which was then purchased by Pernod Ricard in 2001. Eventually, this distillery was purchased by the BenRiach Distillery Company Limited, now producing their own whisky.
Benriach consists of non-typical pear-shaped pot stills. The distillery consists of 2 wash stills, each holding 16,500 litres in capacity and 2 spirit stills, each holding 9,500 litres in capacity. Each of these runs for 6 hours, which is an incredibly slow distillation process, thus creating a fine distillate.
Benriach distiller produces all of its own malt, using both un-peated and peated malt in their whiskies. However, it’s uncertain as to whether they use their own malt for the entirety of their production output.
There are a variety of casks stored at Benriach in “dunnage warehouses” with typical tamped clay floors, with larger racked warehouses to store more casks. At Benriach, they opt for a variety of casks, ranging from Marsala casks to sherry casks, bourbon barrels, quarter casks and French wine casks.
